Notice to WDC Membership: Proposed Dues Increase

Dear WDC Members,

On May 19, 2026 a resolution to raise WDC’s dues from $35 to $55 per year will be presented and voted upon by WDC members present at the Annual Meeting.

Over the past four months, WDC’s Board of Directors has been examining and discussing our current dues structure and finances. After an appointed dues task force made up of WDC members conducted a deep dive and made its recommendation, the Board voted to increase the membership dues to $55 per year.

Background and rationale for the proposed dues increase:

WDC’s dues have not been raised in more than 25 years (1999) based on conversations with two former WDC presidents and a review of WDC records.

The increase in annual dues from $35 to $55 will enable WDC to better cover rising operational expenses including insurance, state and federal reporting fees, legal services, digital services, credit card and banking fees. Additionally, expenses associated with WDC programs and events have risen precipitously in recent years: venue rental fees, audio-visual-recording fees, facilities and service staff labor costs, food and beverage.

WDC will continue to offer free of charge events for our dues paying members including the Fall kickoff, holiday party and the annual membership meeting. WDC will also continue to offer free of charge public events (like candidate forums) as well as selected Advocacy- and Community Education-related events.

Process for Notice to the Membership and vote at the Annual Membership Meeting

The resolution to raise the dues is being communicated to the membership via this newsletter and will be communicated two more times via email before the Annual Membership Meeting on May 19, 2026. The dues increase resolution will be made and voted upon at the Annual Membership Meeting.

The dues resolution will be voted upon by the members present according to the WDC bylaws, Article II/Members/Section 2.01

“ Dues : The Board of Directors shall set the amount of the annual dues. Changes in the dues amount shall require a vote by the general membership following approval of the Board of Directors. A simple majority of those members who are present and voting shall be sufficient to adopt the dues.”

On Thursday, April 9, WDC is convening an event for Democrats and the democratically inclined public to hear from special guest speaker Simon Rosenberg of Hopium Chronicles .

Hopium Chronicles is a nationally known Substack newsletter and political organizing community founded in March of 2023 by DC-based Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg. Hopium provides keen insights and informed political projections that emphasize electoral success paired with civic engagement. The nationwide Hopium community focuses on countering Democratic pessimism with strategic and positive action.

Hopium also highlights and raises funds for Democratic Congressional candidates who are poised to tip the scales in November 2026. These highly competitive “ Winning the House ” candidates include Janelle Stelson (PA-10), Paige Cognetti (PA-08), Christina Bohannon (IA-1), Sarah Trone Garriott (IA-3), Jo Mendoza (AZ-6), Jonathan Nez (AZ-2), Elaine Luria (VA-2), Jamie Ager (NC-11) and others. (I’m an enthusiastic monthly contributor to two of these candidates, so far.)

WDC Advocacy Continues

The MGA (Maryland General Assembly) had a busy week of March 16th, with a rare Saturday session on March 21st and with a few key bills “crossing over” at the last moment on Monday, March 23rd, the 69th day of this year’s 90-day session, known as “crossover day.”

“Crossover” is an important day in the General Assembly. A bill that passes in one chamber—either the House or the Senate—by crossover is guaranteed a hearing in the opposite chamber. Because the MGA meets for only 90 days each year and bills must be passed by both chambers before they can be signed by the governor, bills that have not passed in one chamber by crossover have a narrower path to becoming law by Sine Die, the day that session ends, which falls on April 13th this year.

While the path for a bill to become a law is narrower after crossover, the path does not close until Sine Die. Bills not clearing their chamber of origin by the 69th day are assigned to the Rules Committee in the second chamber. WDC and other advocacy groups still hope to see more bills heard on the floor of both chambers and become law.

We continue to advocate—both on bills that have passed one chamber as well as a couple still stuck in committee. Please keep your eye out for advocacy alerts and other updates from our Advocacy Committee.

President's Message

In honor of Women’s History Month , I’m highlighting three iconic women leaders whose lives continue to inspire and move Americans to action.

Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) lived a life of tireless truth telling. She was a journalist, anti-lynching activist, a women’s suffragist, and an early civil rights movement leader. Wells-Barnett pioneered the field of investigative journalism and, in 1895 she published “A Red Record.” This 100-page book provided history and a statistical record of lynchings of African Americans, shaping the anti-lynching movement. Her brave and dogged work unequivocally demonstrated that lynchings were racist murders, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was the first woman to join a presidential cabinet as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945. When she was appointed, she gave the President a list of policies she intended to pursue. On that list were things we now take for granted as Americans: Social Security, unemployment compensation, the banning of child labor, the minimum wage and the 40-hour work week.

Dolores Huerta , born in 1930, is most well known as the co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union with Cesar Chavez. A consummate organizer and negotiator during her long career, she has gone toe-to-toe with fellow lobbyists and elected officials on behalf of farm workers and their families. To this day, she continues to develop leaders and advocates for women and their families through the Dolores Huerta Foundation .

WDC honors figures like Ida, Frances, and Dolores this month by continuing to press for state and county legislation to protect Maryland women and their families. Many of our members are also participating in collective action to save our democracy. WDC Annapolis Day - February 4

Yes, there was Weather. There was snow outside the Louis L. Goldstein Treasury building. There was snow outside the Lowe House of Delegates Office Building. There was snow outside the James and Miller Senate Office Buildings. And there was snow outside the Maryland Statehouse. February 4th was a typical winter day and a great day for advocacy.

The more than thirty WDC advocates were fired up! Comptroller Brooke Lierman hosted us for the day. The new House of Delegates speaker, The Honorable Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk, and our host, The Honorable Brooke Lierman, Comptroller of Maryland, addressed us first. The Speaker shared her story and legislative priorities and spoke passionately about the needs of immigrants and the importance of education, while the Comptroller shared an overview of the comptroller’s function. Both were generous with their time and willingness to answer advocates’ questions. Subcommittee chairs and other issue captains huddled and then dispersed to pre-scheduled meetings with legislators. Some advocates were able to visit morning committee meetings and listen to hearings.

Delegate Dana Jones, President of Women Legislators of Maryland, addressed the group at lunch and shared legislative activity focused on improving the lives of girls and women in the state. While we ate, many members of the Montgomery County Delegation who were not in committee meetings stopped by to speak to our group. A special thanks to Delegates Crutchfield, Korman, Lopez, Mireku-North, Palakovich Carr, Queen, Solomon, Spiegel, Vogel, Wims, and Senator Waldstreicher.

We then walked en masse to the State House, where we met with Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, who shared the work of the administration and answered questions from our youngest advocates, our NextGen members, who are politically motivated students from Walt Whitman High School.

Our Advocacy is not over. Many bills will be heard in committee over the next few weeks, including a WDC priority bill, HB1356 / SB857, which aims to protect employees from being forced to choose between employment and speaking and protesting lawfully when they are off duty. The Maryland Employee Civic Activity and Lawful Expression Protection Act is sponsored by Delegate Lopez in the House and by Senator Waldstreicher in the Senate. WDC President Cynthia Rubenstein is speaking at the Rally.

The State of Maryland has spent 17 years NOT providing women with a community-based prerelease center to assist in their return to society from the women’s state prison. The 2021 Gender-Responsive Prerelease Act required the state to build such a facility; it has failed to comply with the statute. Male prisoners have these resources.

WDC has been part of WPEC since 2019. With your help, we can pass revised legislation this year that will finally force the state to provide incarcerated women being released from prison the same opportunities as released incarcerated men are given. Let’s show Governor Moore and the Maryland General Assembly that Maryland’s women want them to BUILD IT NOW! Governor Moore Statement on the Passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today released the following statement regarding the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson.

“Today, Maryland mourns the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson—a giant of the civil rights movement and a champion for the dignity of working people.

“Of the many shoulders that we stand on, Jesse Jackson’s were amongst the broadest. He led with love and reminded all of us of our voice and our power. Reverend Jackson was a trailblazer who never waited for permission or to ask for a seat at the table—he insisted on it, and he widened that table for generations to come.

“Reverend Jackson spent his life turning pain into purpose and protest into progress and organizing communities to make those promises real.

“Dawn and I send our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and to all who loved him and were shaped by his life’s work. We pray that Reverend Jackson may enjoy eternal peace and a well-deserved rest.”

Moore signs bills banning agreements between local police, federal immigration agencies: Sheriffs have 90 days to get out of so-called ‘287(g)’ agreements with ICE

Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed emergency legislation Tuesday banning 287(g) agreements between local police agencies and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending years of effort by immigration advocates who say local police should not be doing the work of federal agents.

Senate Bill 245 and House Bill 444 take effect immediately, and give the nine Maryland counties 90 days to end their agreements with the feds. But the fight may not be over yet, as sheriffs in several of those counties said they are considering going to court to challenge the law that they said will lead to more, not less, immigration chaos in the state. Celebrating Black History Month

The above quotes are favorites of mine and are especially apt in these fraught times as we commemorate Black History month. Throughout February we have the opportunity to pay special attention to the people and events in the history of the African diaspora, including civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and Black feminist and poet bell hooks. There are innumerable lessons to be learned from Black History that can help us hold on to “infinite hope” and propel us to build a “beloved community,” a vision expressed by Martin Luther King, Jr. for a societybuilt on justice, equal opportunity, and love, where poverty, racism, and violence are eradicated through nonviolent means. That vision has urgent resonance today and should continue to spur us to collective action to achieve it.

Additionally, important lessons are contained in American literature and nonfiction by a myriad of Black authors. Because I’m a book nerd, I want to highlight two books of several that have had deep staying power for me. I highly recommend them for their profound brilliance and humanity.

The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. This slim book, published in 1963, packed a wallop with Baldwin’s personal examination of the legacy of racism. The Atlantic’s review in my paperback version describes it this way: “So eloquent in its passion and so scorching in its candor that it is bound to unsettle any reader. As a novelist and writer of uncommon talent, James Baldwin plunges to the human heart of the matter.”

The Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson , tells the epic story of the Great Migration of nearly six million Black citizens from the South to northern, midwestern, and western cities between 1915 and 1970. It is vivid, narrative nonfiction and makes history come alive, illuminating the story of Black citizens whose journeys transformed our nation.

May we all read and learn. May we all have a meaningful Black History Month. May we all continue to strive to build our beloved community.

With the Maryland General Assembly two-and-a-half weeks into its session, WDC’s advocacy is already well underway.

We have submitted testimony in support of eight critical bills, including: anti-masking legislation, the Path Act, the women’s prerelease center, graduate student unions, better data collection and reporting on bullying and harassment in our schools, special elections, and a bill to remove firearms from domestic abusers under temporary restraining orders.

In coming weeks, we expect to support legislation to protect our civil rights, our environment, and our neighbors and to speed our transition to green energy, more affordable housing, and universal access to care and healthcare.

Join Us on Feb. 28 for this important discussion about charging children as adults in criminal cases.

Confining children in adult prisons and jails has, among other negative outcomes, been associated with a 30% increased risk of mortality during early to mid-adulthood (ages 18-39 years). Nationally, Black children are four times more likely to be charged as adults; in Maryland, 77% of children charged as adults are Black.

Legislation this session seeks to reduce the charging of children as adults. SB 323, The Youth Charging Reform Act, is sponsored by Senators Smith, Hettleman, Love, Muse, Sydnor, and West; the cross-filed bill is HB 409 Delegates Bartlett, Toles and Lehman. Similar legislation was introduced in the last session. With the Chairs of both the Senate Judicial Proceedings and House Judiciary Committees as sponsors, the legislation could pass this session.

WDC is sponsoring this event to discuss the extent to which children are charged as adults, its implications for health, welfare and safety, and how the legislation would limit its use. The panel will include Senator Will Smith, Georgetown Law Professor Kristin Henning, and Eddy Ellis of the Campaign for Fair Sentencing of Youth. Olinda Moyd, Vice President of the Sentencing Project Board, will moderate. It will be an informative discussion about an issue we all need to understand. To register, CLICK HERE .

The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) has an open seat for a male/non-binary* member representing Maryland Legislative District 9A. The successful candidate will complete the unexpired term ending in November 2026.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich invites residents, community organizations, climate and environmental activists, and residents to attend a community forum on data centers from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Leggett Executive Office Building (LEOB) auditorium. Councilmembers Luedtke, Friedson, Glass Introduce Climate Resiliency Legislation

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 20, 2026— Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke, Andrew Friedson, and Evan Glass introduced legislation today to strengthen Montgomery County’s response to climate change. Bill 2-26 - Taxation - Fuel-Energy Tax-Amendments will provide the Montgomery County Green Bank with additional flexibility and resources to support critically needed climate resiliency projects.

President's Message

On Sunday December 14, WDC held its holiday party at the beautiful and historic venue of Sandy Spring Museum. The weather was frigid, windy, and icy; the team of Events organizers was nervous about turnout. Those nerves vanished when a capacity crowd of hardy Democrats showed up to hear from four stellar elected leaders who wowed the room: Senator Angela Alsobrooks, Congressman Jamie Raskin, Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins and Delegate Ashanti Martinez.

WDC marked the season of giving by presenting a $1,000 donation check to Congressman Raskin for Tommy’s Pantry , in honor of his late son Tommy Raskin, whose life exemplified a commitment to human dignity and taking care of others.

Advocacy Corner

Last week’s special session of the Maryland General Assembly included a significant number of veto overrides. After the House of Delegates elected Joseline Peña-Melnyk as its new Speaker , the General Assembly quickly moved to override several of the Governor’s vetoes. Under Maryland law, when the General Assembly convenes to consider vetoed legislation, it must act on those vetoes before taking up any other legislative business.

These overrides notably included several important environment and energy bills:

SB 909 / HB 1037 – Energy Resource Adequacy Planning Act.   Requires the state to proactively plan for sufficient, reliable energy capacity to meet Maryland’s future electricity needs as the grid transitions to cleaner energy sources. 

SB 116 / HB 270 – Data Center Impact Study.   Directs the state to study the energy, water, land-use, and environmental impacts of large data centers and their effects on local communities and the electric grid. 

SB 149 / HB 128 – “RENEW Study” (Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Study).   Requires an analysis of the total economic costs of greenhouse gas emissions in Maryland to better inform climate policy, planning, and investment decisions.

Many delegates and senators from the Montgomery County delegation fought long and hard for these bills. We congratulate them on their eventual success.

Notably, the special session did not include action on two issues that WDC advocated for throughout the summer and fall: mid-cycle redistricting and a statewide ban on 287(g) agreements , which deputize local law enforcement to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) .

That said, progress has been made on both fronts. The Governor’s Commission on Redistricting voted to recommend that the General Assembly proceed with drawing new legislative maps. In addition, the Montgomery County Council voted to codify Marc Elrich’s Executive Order 135-19 from 2019. This action, known as the "Trust Act" (Expedited Bill 35-25) , protects immigrants and prohibits county law enforcement from assisting ICE.

The General Assembly will reconvene for its regular session on January 14, 2026 . Between opening day and Sine Die , you will be hearing from us more frequently. The Advocacy Committee has been hard at work since early fall—discussing legislative priorities, identifying and researching bills, and engaging legislators. Dorothy Manevich , co-chair of our Advancing Democracy subcommittee, delivered WDC’s first testimony of the season at a delegation hearing in support of enabling legislation for Ranked Choice Voting .

We hope you will join us in Annapolis on February 4 for WDC’s Advocacy Day . It will be an exciting, jam-packed day of meetings with legislators and their staffs.

Despite efforts to manage the demand on resources, Maryland’s 2027 deficit is projected at $1.5 billion. Maryland Matters recently reported that the projections are for that to rise to $3.2 billion in 2028 and $3.5 billion in 2029. As the deficit rises what are the implications for the State?

The 2025 General Assembly session was driven by imperatives to find cuts and limit new expenditures. This meant stepping back on dearly held commitments like the Blueprint for Maryland schools. While the significant investment in the Blueprint has been seen as an essential investment in Maryland’s future, healthcare, programs to address child poverty, transportation, environment, and supporting business expansion have also been priorities. Looking forward, what can we do to fund such priorities?

We have asked Comptroller Brooke Lierman to join us to give some hard facts about the State’s fiscal condition and what she sees as the possibilities for expanding our revenue base. And, we have asked Delegate Marc Korman to give us a sense of what lies ahead in navigating a budget that can reasonably address projected deficits while preserving spending priorities.

MCDCC Seeks Member At-Large

The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee will fill a vacancy for a member at-large at its regular business meeting on February 10, 2026. The successful candidate will complete the unexpired term ending in November 2026. Candidates for this position must fulfill the following criteria as of the date of appointment:

Identify as female or non-binary *
Be registered in Maryland Legislative District 9A, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, or 20.

MCDCC Seeks District 9A Member

The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) has an open seat for a male/non-binary* member representing Maryland Legislative District 9A. The successful candidate will complete the unexpired term ending in November 2026.

District 9A includes the northwestern edges of Montgomery County, from Clarksburg across to Damascus and points to the northeast of Damascus. You can look up your legislative district at mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Members/District .

Peña-Melnyk Elected Unanimously As House Speaker, Making History in the Process

Maryland lawmakers made history Tuesday, electing the first Afro-Latina and the first immigrant to serve as House speaker.

Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk (D-Prince George’s and Anne Arundel) is the 109th person to serve as speaker of the House of Delegate but just the second woman of color in the job, following her predecessor, Del. Adrienne Jones (D-Baltimore County). Her rise to the speaker’s rostrum caps a nearly two-decade career in Annapolis, but got its start in an unlikely place: a small home with a leaky roof in the Dominican Republic. Resolve & Fortitude, WDC will not stand on the sidelines

President's Message

On Sunday, September 21, WDC welcomed and heard from Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman, House of Delegates Majority Leader David Moon, and Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart, a triumvirate of exemplary public servants grappling with the impacts of federal actions on our state and county.

County Council Member Kate Stewart led off the event by candidly stating that the federal government is currently “out to get us.” Ongoing harms are significant, especially for immigrant communities and laid off federal workers and contractors. Montgomery County is responding to protect its residents and cushion the blows in myriad ways, involving partnerships with MCPS, the Board of Education, Montgomery College, nonprofit partners, and Montgomery County agencies. There is plenty more to be done. Uncertain times lie ahead as the county faces still-to-be-known impacts on its revenue. One positive: Montgomery County is better positioned than many other jurisdictions to respond to and withstand the challenges.

Comptroller Brooke Lierman highlighted the recent Comptroller’s Office report on the state of Maryland's economy that is serving as an essential guide for state officials. It is helping them figure out how to protect the state and stand up to the federal government’s assault. Maryland is losing many billions of dollars due to federal cuts across the board. In 2024 the federal government pumped $150 billion into the state’s economy, but since January 2025 federal revenue coming to Maryland has been dropping due to factors including significant numbers of federal job losses and cancelled government contracts. Maryland is being challenged to address the losses.

Comptroller Lierman emphasized that state leaders are working to blunt the impact and to lessen dependence on federal dollars by moving ahead to accelerate private sector growth. Additionally, Maryland’s Attorney General continues to fight back with lawsuits against the illegal cuts.

Delegate David Moon minced no words. Bottom line, his point of view is that this administration will punish Maryland whether we push back hard or attempt to work with it. One of the bills he’ll be proposing is in response to Donald Trump’s order to redistrict in red states (like Texas and Missouri) to “find seats” and keep Congress in Republican hands in 2026. The blue states of California and New York are working to counter those actions by pursuing redistricting as well. WDC’s board has pressed the Governor, Senate President, and Speaker of the House to move expeditiously and call a special session to address redistricting. We plan to continue to make the case over the coming weeks and months.

By the end of this sobering but galvanizing event, two words came to mind: resolve and fortitude. WDC will not be on the sidelines. We have resolve and fortitude—loads of it!

Fall is fast approaching and WDC is fired up and ready to go!

Please see below for two key WDC events in September and a special opportunity to welcome visiting patriots to Montgomery County who are honoring the anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution by putting their feet where their democratic values are.

On Thursday evening, September 11 , WDC is addressing the critical issue of “Resilient Communities: Navigating the New Emergency Preparedness Landscape.” Federal cuts and lack of leadership are endangering lives and communities. This state of affairs makes it essential to understand what’s available at our state and local level. As individuals and community members, we need to be prepared to manage breakdowns in the emergency preparedness systems and the protections upon which we rely. On Thursday, September 18 , one day after Constitution Day, several Montgomery County organizations and faith-based groups will welcome the “We Are America March” walkers , en route from Independence Hall in Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. on their 14-day, 160-mile march for democracy. On Sunday afternoon, September 21 , WDC will hold its “Fall Membership Kickoff.” This will be a critical convening where WDC members will hear from Brooke Lierman , Comptroller of Maryland, David Moon , Majority Leader of the Maryland House of Delegates, and Kate Stewart , President of the Montgomery County Council. Our speakers will address the continuing federal impacts on the state and county and how elected officials are responding to protect Marylanders and residents of Montgomery County. Lastly, as a reading recommendation, I want to highlight a brilliant Democratic activist, Jess Piper, who writes my favorite Substack, “The View from Rural Missouri.” You can find her at: https://jesspiper.substack.com. Jess is a former English teacher, calls herself a Dirt Road Democrat and is the Executive Director for Blue Missouri, a grass roots organization that is building up the Democratic party in rural communities. She’s a firecracker. We need more firecrackers.

Dear WDC Members and Friends,

On June 10, 2025, WDC held its annual membership meeting and biennial election of officers, acknowledged our outgoing executive team, and welcomed Maryland’s Attorney General Anthony Brown as our distinguished keynote speaker for the evening.

WDC members unanimously elected the entire slate of new officers. Retiring Treasurer Mary Lou Fox and Secretary JoAnne Koravos received special recognition and gratitude for their years of superlative service to WDC. As the incoming President, I had the honor and pleasure of thanking Tazeen Ahmad for setting an example of wise leadership and grace under pressure over the past two highly successful years.

I also had the privilege of introducing Attorney General Brown, who since January 20, 2025, has been relentlessly working to protect Marylanders from the harmful authoritarian actions of the Trump Administration. He has led or joined Attorneys General from other states in more than 24 suits and legal actions. The efforts are ongoing and have resulted in key successes along with some setbacks. Attorney General Brown remains undaunted and stalwart, battling on the front lines for us. He and his AG colleagues are playing the long game.

I’m grateful to the WDC membership for giving me the opportunity to lead this respected organization of 630-plus members across Montgomery County. I’m also grateful-in-advance to WDC’s talented Board of Directors who will be helping me design and implement an action plan for 2025 - 2027. We’ll be working on programs, events, elections of Democrats in 2026, calls to action, and legislative advocacy. Additionally, 2026 is WDC’s 70th Anniversary year, and we will be planning a gala celebration befitting of an organization that featured Eleanor Roosevelt as its first guest speaker.

Dear WDC Members and Friends,

It’s hard to believe it has already been two years since I stepped into the role of president. It has been a tremendous honor to lead this organization, and I’m deeply grateful to the incredible board of directors who have served with me and all our volunteers who have given their time and shared their talents with us.

Over the past two years, and especially in the last four months, it has become increasingly clear just how vital grassroots organizations like WDC are. In the face of the Trump Administration’s ongoing attacks on federal workers, the rule of law, institutions of higher education, and the very foundations of our democracy, our role has never been more essential.

I want to quote Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, executive director of the Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Center at NYU School of Law. She wrote recently in The Contrarian: “When news out of the nation’s capital feels like too much to bear, … take the fight local. It is not just a platitude. The time for pressure is right now in many states—and it is on all of us to support groups on the ground, show up for our neighbors, and speak up for our values and to our leaders.”

She’s right—we know intuitively she is. She’s reminding us that local action is both powerful and urgent . The only question is whether we’ll embrace it with all that’s needed.

As we look ahead, we face serious challenges. Reckless federal policies continue to threaten civil liberties, economic stability, public education, access to healthcare, and environmental protections. Now more than ever, we need strong leadership at the state and county levels, and we absolutely need the vital work of civic and grassroots organizations like WDC . And to do the work, WDC needs you.

From keeping you informed about key events in our region, to bringing you dynamic speakers like Heather Cox Richardson, Jill Wine-Banks, and Simon Rosenberg, WDC has consistently stepped up to lead the way on education and action. We’ve also connected you with our elected leaders from Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, to Rep. Jamie Raskin, Comptroller Brooke Lierman, and others because we are committed to providing you with timely and valuable information about the issues that matter most to our community. WDC aims to empower members and work in partnership with allies to transform shared concerns into meaningful educational programming, effective advocacy, and action.

We are proud to work with other groups, like the Maryland Democratic Party, Do The Most Good, the Women’s National Democratic Club, Indivisible MoCoWomen, Silver Spring Progressive Action, and others that are leading boots-on-the-ground efforts in VA & NJ, the only two states with elections in 2025, and in our own communities. On June 14, WDC is co-sponsoring “No Kings on the Pike,” a National Day of Action and mass mobilization in response to the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption of the Trump administration.

We will continue to share many other opportunities to help with getting out the vote and fundraising to support democratic candidates in 2025 and 2026.

We must continue this work and face the challenges ahead together!

As I prepare to step down along with this executive committee, I’m thrilled to see a new group of dedicated members stepping up to lead. I am so excited to introduce a phenomenal slate of incoming nominees for officers at our Biennial Meeting and Reception on June 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Women’s Club of Chevy Chase. Please join us!

We are honored to welcome Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown as our keynote speaker. Attorney General Brown will share how he and like-minded attorneys general around the country are protecting us and defending the rule of law during these challenging times.

In addition to electing new WDC leadership and hearing from our speaker, this event will be a celebration of our collective efforts, our shared successes, and our continued commitment to the work ahead. It will be a wonderful opportunity to come together, reconnect, recommit, and re-energize for the future. I can’t wait to see you there!

100 Days In: Resistance in Action

This week marked 100 chaotic days of the Trump Administration. It feels like a lifetime, but we’re just getting started—and the fight is on. Grassroots organizers, unions, civic groups, and political coalitions across the country are mobilized. The Democratic resistance is energized and active.

Democrats in Congress are pushing back hard—blocking dangerous bills, holding town halls in deep-red districts, and calling out GOP overreach. Leaders like Jamie Raskin, Chris Van Hollen, Angela Alsobrooks, April McClain Delaney, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Jasmine Crockett, and others are front and center, alongside state and local champions.

However, over the past several weeks, there’s been a clear shift—Democratic leaders are getting bolder and more creative in calling out the Trump Administration and the MAGA agenda, and people are embracing this new strategy.

Resistance in Action

Beginning March 31 and ending April 1, Sen. Cory Booker delivered a record-breaking 25-hour speech on the Senate floor warning of Trump’s damage to democracy in the face of institutional silence.

“I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis. In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans' safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy and even our aspirations as a people," Booker said.

On April 16, Sen. Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador, spotlighting the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, despite a court order to keep him in the U.S., as a chilling example of the Trump Administration’s contempt for the rule of law. In a lengthy letter to the President Trump, Sen. Van Hollen argued that the implications of Mr. Abrego Garcia’s plight extend far beyond one individual.

“While Mr. Abrego Garcia is at the center of this case, its consequences impact the due process rights of everyone who lives in America. ...If your administration can strip away the constitutional rights of one man in defiance of court orders, it can do it to all of us,” Van Hollen wrote.

On April 27, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker delivered a powerful call to action firing up New Hampshire Democrats and asking them if they were “ready for the fight.” “I understand the tendency to give in to despair right now. But despair is an indulgence that we cannot afford in the times upon which history turns. Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now."

“These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. ...We must castigate them on the soap box, and then punish them at the ballot box...when we survive this shameful episode of American history...we will relegate their portraits to the museum halls reserved for tyrants and traitors.”

We are seeing a clear shift: Democrats are moving from seeking bipartisanship to confronting the MAGA agenda head-on. From activists to elected officials, the message is clear: WE MUST ACT . Sitting out is not an option. Our democracy, our values, and our future are at stake.

What Are We Doing at WDC?

At WDC, we’re committed to informing, organizing, and empowering action.

On April 9, we held a lunch honoring former Senator Ben Cardin, former Congressman John Sarbanes, and former Congressman David Trone for their enduring service to Maryland. There was an exciting sense of community, renewed energy and hope generated by their remarks.
On April 25, I had the distinct honor of moderating a conversation with renowned historian and scholar Heather Cox Richardson hosted by WDC at the National Press Club. We explored how our nation’s past shapes today’s political landscape. The recording is available on our YouTube channel (link below).
On May 14, we urge you to come and hear from Caitlin Durkovich, Deputy Homeland Security Advisor in the Biden Administration. This “Happy Hour with a Purpose” at Citizens and Culture in Silver Spring will feature remarks and Q&A on how Homeland Security intersects with all the threats facing our democracy and our neighbors.
On June 10, WDC will hold our biennial meeting and elections with special guest Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown who will discuss the many cases Maryland has filed or joined against the Administration, in addition to taking your questions. I can’t believe it has been almost two years since I took over as WDC president. It has been such an honor to serve in that role. Look for more details about this upcoming meeting in the next couple of weeks.

Finally, there are many ways to take meaningful action, stay engaged, and DO SOMETHING . Whether it’s joining local groups, amplifying messages, or showing up to events like town halls, demonstrations, zoom teach-ins, every action counts. Here are some examples of actions you can take this month.

We are fortunate to be represented in Congress by terrific leaders, so please also call your friends and family in places dominated by Republicans and urge them to do the same. Their voices are especially important.
Promote and participate in the May Day actions:

RALLY: The NIH community is holding weekly vigils to commemorate and mourn the losses resulting from cuts to funding, programs, and people that have been both discriminatory and indiscriminate. Beginning Saturday May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Medical Center Metro station at NIH in Bethesda.

Block budget increase for ICE and mass deportation : The government is detaining and deporting people without due process. Even more outrageous is that some of them are U.S. citizens, including children.
It just deported a 2-year-old, as well as a 4-year-old who was being treated for cancer—their cruelty is beyond belief!

Some Ideas to Work on in the Months Ahead

For those of you who attended our February 18 Rise & Resist forum with Hopium Chronicles’ Simon Rosenberg, Council President Kate Stewart, and CASA’s Cathryn Ann Paul Jackson, you know there was a lot of important information shared about resources and opportunities to get involved in the resistance.

Audience questions were lively and often emotional. Many of you requested the resources and information shared by our speakers at that event, so here it is.

Second, from Council President Kate Stewart we heard about some of the key initiatives the County Council is working on under her leadership and what changes in the federal administration means for the county and the state of Maryland—our workforce, our economy, our communities. To share information with residents, the County Council is holding a series of biweekly online resource sessions focused on employment, work source development and unemployment benefits, immigration issues, housing assistance, health and wellness, and essential County services.

The second of these resource sessions will be March 6 at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom . Rep. Jamie Raskin will join Council President Stewart, and a panel of experts for a virtual information program on mental health resources and tips for taking care of your mental wellbeing.

Additionally, the Council’s resource webpage has information on a wide variety of services for Montgomery County residents.

And from CASA’s Cathryn Ann Paul Jackson, we heard about lots of resources for those needing support, and opportunities to help for those able to pitch in. There are three priority immigration bills in the Maryland General Assembly this session—the data privacy act, protecting sensitive locations act, and the values act. Here are a few ways to get involved in the work CASA is doing. You can also reach out to them directly. On the CASA website you can find Know Your Rights materials (at the top you can click to get all of the same materials in Spanish or French). This includes the 24/7 hotline number where people can report ICE activity.

CASA is still setting up the online process for bystander training, which Cathryn discussed. So, keep an eye out for it on their website, but we will also forward it to you, once we have it. You can find a video of the full program below or on YouTube .

In addition to all these opportunities to get engaged, WDC has a great slate of events coming up.

We’re excited to announce that on March 25 , we’ll have Adam Ortiz, Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator for the U.S. EPA under President Biden and Dr. Fatima Candace Vahlsing, Vice President, Ocean Conservancy, and former Senior Advisor for Clean Energy Industrial Strategy & Climate at USAID, to join us to talk about the environment. This Happy Hour with a Purpose will be held at Los Chorros in Wheaton at 6:30 pm, so please save that date and invite others to join.

On April 9, we will honor Former Senator Ben Cardin and Former Rep. John Sarbanes at the Chevy Chase Women’s Club, at noon.

And in other exciting news—We have Heather Cox Richardson joining us on the evening of April 25 !! More details to follow.

So, mark your calendars.

Please keep an eye out for the registration links and join us if you can. This is also a fantastic opportunity to introduce others to WDC, so bring a friend and learn how you can get involved in vital discussions and actions. As Alice Walker wisely said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” But we know that when we unite and organize, we are far from powerless. Let’s come together, take action, and make our voices heard. The responsibility to defend our democracy and protect our communities is ours—let’s rise to the challenge.

In closing, I want to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to our incredible advocacy team! Under the leadership of Advocacy Chair Cynthia Rubenstein, along with Co-chairs Diana Conway and JoAnne Koravos, WDC successfully held its first in-person Annapolis Day since the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizing all the appointments and bringing our legislators together takes tremendous effort, and they did an outstanding job. A big thank you also goes to our issue captains, subcommittee chairs, and committee members—this wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication and hard work.

Advocacy is a responsibility

These first few weeks of the Trump Administration have been brutal.

The savage pace with which our democratic institutions are being attacked and dismantled, with the acquiescence of Republicans, who control both houses of Congress, is shocking. It’s easy to feel despondent and slide into disengagement, but that's exactly what we can't afford right now.

As we deal with the fallout from a second Trump term, we are going to need the broadest possible coalition of people who value democracy to step up and work together. This will involve organizing or attending protest rallies and combating misinformation, and may encourage us to build new partnerships. Just keep in mind, each of us must follow/take our own path. We can’t do everything, but we can each do something. Let’s think about what we are good at and do that.

It is also critical that we mobilize and advocate at the local and state levels, where our advocacy can be powerful. Advocacy isn't just an option—it's a responsibility we all share to ensure that our voices are heard, our values are represented, and our communities are protected. I encourage you to join us for this important day of action. Together, we can ensure that democracy remains a force for good in the lives of Marylanders facing these challenges.

Here are just a few ways you can take action:

Join a group engaged in the resistance. There are many groups doing important work that you can actively engage in, including WDC. Look for an issue that you are passionate about and find out who is working on it. Whether it’s a political group, a nonprofit, or a civic association, find your calling and put your shoulder to that wheel. Here are just a few examples: Our local allies include political organizations like DoTheMostGood or Silver Spring Progressive Action. And nonprofits like the Manna Food Center or Tommy’s Pantry are vital to meeting the daily needs of our vulnerable neighbors. Nationally, organizations like the ACLU, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and the Brennan Center are among many doing critical work in defense of our threatened democracy.

Be supportive. Many people are facing really difficult times and are fearful of what the future holds. Let’s make sure to support our friends, families, and neighbors. It could be as simple as checking in to see how someone is doing emotionally or providing information and resources to families that suddenly find themselves uprooted and unemployed. Offering to babysit someone’s kids or driving a friend to a doctor’s appointment would likely be greatly appreciated. Do things that are sustainable. Find one person or one family to support, and that might even be your own family.

Stay informed. I know that for me, since November, it has been difficult to watch the news. So, I read a variety of publications online like the New York Times, Bloomberg, or Politico, instead. I also recommend several writers on Substack like Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Simon Rosenberg, and Jennifer Rubin on The Contrarian. As hard as it is to watch what’s going on in the federal government, we must keep abreast of what is happening and the real impact it is having on people’s lives. We also need to make sure we are informing others.

Take care of yourself. We are all under a great deal of stress, so it is important to take time for self-care. This is not a sprint, but a marathon. We need to be healthy to continue the work we are doing.

Celebrate Black History Month

Today is the first day of Black History Month—this month allows us to honor the incredible contributions of Black Americans and reflect on the ongoing struggle against systemic racism in our country in these fraught times.

In 1976, when President Gerald Ford formally recognized Black History Month, he urged Americans to “ seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history. ”

Forty years later, President Barack Obama echoed a similar sentiment from the White House.

" Black History Month shouldn't be treated as though it is somehow separate from our collective American history or somehow just boiled down to a compilation of greatest hits from the March on Washington or from some of our sports heroes, " Obama said. " It's about the lived, shared experience of all African Americans, high and low, famous and obscure, and how those experiences have shaped and challenged and ultimately strengthened America, " he continued.

This February, Black History Month has a new significance as President Trump’s administration attacks diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at every level of the federal government. In addition to calling for the elimination of government diversity programs, the Trump administration revoked a 60-year-old executive order that protected equal opportunity in employment. He, also, signed an EO titled “ Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling ,” which seeks to withhold funding from any schools that teach that the United States is “fundamentally racist, sexist or otherwise discriminatory” signaling a troubling effort to suppress teaching about race and racism.

In yesterday’s press release titled “ Identity Months Dead at DOD, " the Defense Department announced that beginning immediately, it will no longer recognize several “cultural awareness months,” which include Black History Month, Women's History Month, and National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Starting February 1, neither the Pentagon nor the State Department will recognize Black History Month.

WDC dissents. We honor Black History Month and proudly acknowledge the invaluable contributions Black Americans have made to our nation and the world. While the political landscape may shift, we remain steadfast in our commitment to what truly matters—justice, equality, and unity. However, we recognize the daunting challenges ahead, which is why we’re inviting you to join us for an important discussion on how we can rise and resist.

Moving Forward in 2025

I am so honored to serve as president of WDC and incredibly proud of the remarkable work we've done together this past year, as well as the strong community we continue to build.

The Women's Democratic Club is a force for change. This year, WDC has made a real impact by advocating for issues that matter to women and families across Montgomery County and beyond. Our success would not have been possible without the dedication, energy, and passion each of you brings to this club. So, whether you organized events, wrote letters, hosted fundraisers, or just showed up to support one another, you made a difference. I want to take a moment to celebrate YOU—you are what makes this club so special.

Looking ahead to 2025, we will continue our advocacy with the same commitment, energy, and resolve. We will keep pushing for policies that lift all women and their families. We will fight for affordable housing, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. We will fight to uphold the values of equality, justice, and opportunity for all.

There is no question that there is deep concern about what the future holds. With a new president being sworn in on January 20, many of us are worried about how his policies and rhetoric will impact our families and communities. Trump is threatening to deport immigrants, close federal agencies and departments, reduce the federal workforce, and undermine LGBTQ+ rights. Whether or not he follows through with his threats, the uncertainty is unsettling. We must prepare for these challenges and stand ready to protect the values that define us.

We will also face ongoing threats to women’s rights at the national level. From reproductive health to fair wages, from healthcare access to workplace protections, we know the Trump administration will reverse our hard-won progress. This puts the rights, health, and well-being of women—including our daughters, mothers, and sisters—at risk.

But we are not powerless. We must stand united, and our collective action can shape the future. With your support and your engagement, the Women's Democratic Club will continue to fight for fairness, justice, and inclusivity — the values that have made our county strong. We will work together to protect at-risk communities. We will defend immigrant rights, reproductive freedom, fair wages, and oppose policies that harm our families and communities.

Democrats across the country are organizing, and we in Montgomery County will do the same. Together, we will protect the progress we’ve made and work for a fairer, more equitable future.

In closing, I want to say thank you—from the bottom of my heart—for your tireless work, your commitment to justice, and your unwavering belief in the power of women to lead change. The road ahead may be tough, but we will walk it together.
